WINTER IN THE VINEYARD

As we creep past the winter solstice having experienced some of the coldest temperatures ever recorded, rainfall still eludes us and water catchments remain painfully low. Daffodils and Jonquils now dot the landscape as nature’s pulse quickens, winter’s grip loosens and spring beckons.

Pruning is now over and maintenance activities have taken over with the replacement of broken trellis posts and wires etc. Tractors and spray carts are serviced in expectation of the busy season ahead. The Rutherglen grafting nursery is in the early stages of receiving rootstock and bud wood for the delicate task of grafting the future requirements of the local vineyards.

Winery operations are never ending with house keeping and attention to detail the order of the day. Wines have undergone early sensory evaluation and have begun the journey of turning into wines of regional recognition and distinction.

Winter has also been a time for visitors with Joe Czerwinski from ‘Wine Enthusiast Magazine’ USA, Wine Writer Josh Reynolds from ‘Decanter’ magazine USA, Dan Berger from ‘Vintage Experience’ USA and local boy Campbell Mattinson all enjoying the Master class experiences conducted by the Muscat, Tokay and Durif networks.

On a sad note we must mention the passing of an inspirational local wine maker, family man and friend, 6th Generation winemaker Chris Killeen of Stanton & Killeen Winery. Widely known as the “Prince of Ports” Chris was a much respected and talented winemaker and local identity who will be very sadly missed by many of us.
