THE BLACK DOG CREEK STORY
January 2007
The elusive black dog of Black Dog Creek in north eastern Victoria has been immortalised by Buller Wines on the label of their new range of King Valley table wines.
Local legend has it that Black Dog Creek, located just south of the Buller family home in Rutherglen, was named in the early days of settlement by drovers who sighted a rare black native dog at their campsite by the creek. The name Black Dog Creek is synonymous with the mystery and intrigue of Victoria's gold rush heyday in the 1850s, and was also an area frequented by the infamous Kelly Gang.
The Black Dog Creek range of table wines from Buller includes the 2003 King Valley Merlot, 2004 King Valley Cabernet Merlot and 2005 King Valley Riesling.
The wines represent an exciting new direction for the Buller family, who wanted to introduce a range that was approachable, personality driven and appealing to the consumer without compromising on quality or price.
According to winemaker Richard Buller;
"We are delighted by these first three wines in the Black Dog Creek range. Each is an excellent expression of King Valley regionality and each has a big personality, just like the legend that inspired the label.
"Black Dog Creek presents an excellent complement to our existing portfolio of wines and offers the consumer something out of the ordinary - great quality, King Valley wines at a price that makes them affordable enough for every day drinking."
The 2003 Black Dog Creek King Valley Merlot is medium bodied and soft; the suppleness of Merlot's berry and cherry fruit flavours meld with vanillin oak to produce a versatile wine suited to a wide range of dishes. Combining the structure and tannin of Cabernet Sauvignon with the softness and flavour of Merlot, the berry notes of the 2004 Black Dog Creek King Valley Cabernet Merlot mingle with sweet oak to create a well structured wine - an ideal partner for most red meat dishes, particularly lamb and venison.
The 2005 Black Dog Creek King Valley Riesling is destined for popularity during the warmer months with its crisp flavours of freshly cut apple, zesty lemon and lime citrus. The finish has a pleasant minerally character and the palate weight is delicate but persistent. Delicious served chilled with summer salads and seafood dishes.
