People's choice wine tasting, Melbourne's Federation Square
October 2007
It seems the wine buying public cannot get enough of Buller Wines famous Calliope Shiraz. As one of hundreds of wines on offer for tasting at the North East Victorian Wine Regions Tasting at Melbourne's Federation Square last week, the Calliope Shiraz blitzed the field, winning the best red wine by a very convincing margin.
A record number of over 1,300 of Melbourne's wine loving public ventured out to Fed Square on Wednesday and Thursday of last week and the votes show that Bullers 2004 Calliope Shiraz was the hit of the event.
It is not the first time the Calliope Shiraz has had huge support from the wine loving public. The 2002 Calliope Shiraz won the Great Shiraz Challenge in South Australia, competing against 256 of Australia's best Shiraz's. It won with a huge 90 percent of the vote - an unheardof margin in the history of the event.
Winemaker Andrew Buller holds great stead in winning the public's support. "These public voted awards mean a lot to us here at Bullers, after all they are the people that keep us in business and buy the wines. I am humbled that the Melbourne public thought so much of the Calliope Shiraz. It demonstrates that the Rutherglen Region can make some very appealing reds as well as fortified wines which we are most renowned for.
The Calliope Shiraz is the best selling wine at Bullers Rutherglen Cellar Door and retails for $35 per bottle. It will age for up to 20 years and is made from 86 year old non-irrigated vines. The grapes are hand picked and come into the winery mould free, thereby eliminating the need to add sulphur and allowing a wild yeast ferment. Some of the customer comments are "God came down and touched that barrel, Im in love, This wine is the bomb and thats the best red I've ever tasted". The Calliope Shiraz is on tasting at Bullers Rutherglen Cellar Door seven days a week.
